Description

Momentum by Max Marsillo was originally composed as a duet for guitar and marimba. It was inspired by a mix of artists including Koji Kondo, Bronislaw Kaper, and Harrison Belew. Its melodic material was inspired by On Green Dolphin Street and combines groove, syncopation and harmonic progressions which were inspired by Baroque music. Though the piece was inspired by guitar music, it is very idiomatic to the marimba.

Instrumentation

2 marimbas—(low C)

Reviews

At last, pedagogy meets practice in this all-encompassing duet. This work is equally an etude in lyricism and metric awareness, oscillating between 6/8 and 3/4 in unique ways akin to sesquialtera, or hemiola patterns. While originally conceived for guitar, each of the parts in this marimba adaptation lays well on the instrument, forming a nice counterpoint with one another. Through having individually satisfying parts, this piece will be gratifying to practice and worth exploring musically within the duo chamber setting.

At around four minutes “Momentum” is accessible in length and technical requirements for a variety of performers and is perhaps best suited for the advanced high school or under- graduate percussionist looking to explore duo repertoire that is fun to play, and it will be an audience pleaser. At the same time, access to two 5-octave marimbas may be prohibitive for some performers looking to explore this piece. Despite the range limitations, if feasible, the rhythmic exploration of hemiola patterns is worth the in- vestment of time and will benefit each player’s comfort with compound meter.
