Description

Joaquin On Sunshine by Jim Casella is a creatively-titled piece for a large ensemble of 15-17 players (the extra players are preferable if the marimba parts can be doubled). It has a festive, soulful Afro-Cuban flavor and is thickly scored with a full complement of Latin rhythm section instruments — piano, bass, drumset, timbales, congas, bongos, and shekere. Typical “strong” beats are rarely where melodic or rhythmic emphasis aligns. This emphasis on syncopation and inner-beat rhythms make it an excellent piece to practice groove and ensemble awareness. Joaquin On Sunshine would make a great closer for larger percussion ensemble concerts.
