Description

August by Thomas R. Marceau is a light and graceful marimba solo meant to illustrate delicate accompaniments that surround and fade into simple melodies. Pulling inspiration from acoustic guitar and voice, the piece weaves melody and harmony together into seamless, whimsical gestures. It recommends that the performer distinguish between harmonic and melodic material during practice, a challenge both musically and technically. Through fluttering gestures and subtle rubato, the piece will push the performer's four mallet dexterity and touch through the entire range of the instrument. August is an outstanding canvas to explore subtleties and hidden complexities within undulating musical lines.

“August” is an exceptional example of a non-marimba instrumental style that has been beautifully adapted to complement the marimba’s voice and capabilities. Reminiscent of classical guitar music, this piece explores the range of the marimba through a balance of quick runs and poignant silences, with melodic and thematic material throughout. Indeed, there is plenty of room for the performer’s interpretation of the material, as tempo markings are many times indicated as approximations, and the style is less rigid in its flow and more so akin to speech, with waves of sound and notes followed by natural silences or pauses, which cannot necessarily be perfectly captured in traditional Western notation. The very helpful composer notes explain the atmosphere and nature of the work, and aid in understanding the notation.

Additionally, there are many opportunities for tone exploration through combinations of touch, stroke types, and mallet selections. When all is considered, each performance of “August” can veritably be unique and a deeply personal reflection upon the composer’s musical thoughts.

Through flexibility in the score and freedom for the performer’s interpretation, “August” creates a sound landscape that allows the marimba’s unique tones and timbres to sing. An advanced player who is searching for a virtuosic, thoughtful solo piece will certainly find those qualities (and more) in “August.”
