Description

David K. Bakken’s sextet Capitol Investment is a no-nonsense, hassle-free, easy-to-use piece, devoid of any down-payments, surcharges, or finder’s fees. Plus, at 0% interest, it’s a great way for young investors to enter the market; simple enough for beginning students to achieve but just enough variety to hold their interest. Capitol Investment is dedicated to George V. LeyVa Middle School Percussion Ensemble from San Jose, CA. It is also named after the Capitol Expressway, a major road near the middle school.

This piece comes as a professionally printed and bound score and includes individual parts in PDF format for printing or for tablet viewing.

Instrumentation

2 timpani

Temple blocks

Cymbals (suspended cymbal, crash cymbals)

Drums (snare drum, 2 tom-toms 2, bass drum)

Reviews

This percussion sextet is scored for percussion instruments that most middle school/junior high concert band programs would have available. Composer David Bakken has made an outstanding effort to challenge the entry-level percussion ensemble into making a tasteful, musical performance.

This sextet is divided into two trios of instrumentation: one using snare drum, temple blocks and two tom-toms; the other using timpani, concert bass drum, and cymbals. This two-minute, 20-second sextet has only 53 measures, yet the second half of the composition gets away from the squareness of 4/4 with the inclusion of a 7/8 measure. Additionally, the piece ends with an accelerando from a stately 112 beats per minute to a more lively 132 beats per minute. All-in-all, “Capitol Investment” is one of the best entry-level percussion sextets I’ve seen in a number of years.
