Graffiti by Chad Heiny is inspired by the composer’s mesmerizing tour of the graffiti-laden Leake Street Tunnel in London, England, where street art is not only legal but encouraged. Six very capable percussionists will find themselves busy multitasking and playing a host of drums, cymbals, metallics, accessories, and found objects in order to paint the scene.
Starting somewhat simply with sounds that might suggest a spray can, the piece begins to develop with a multitude of different rhythms and timbres at each of the multi-percussion setups, many containing foot pedal instruments. Two marching snares, a concert snare, and a field drum demand both orchestral and modern rudimental techniques from two of the performers.
The players will have to navigate a host of fast-paced time signature changes while maintaining composure, listening, and balancing within the ensemble. Soloistic flourishes abound in every part, and there is even a mini duet between dueling guiros! All parts combine to place the listener inside this amazing art-filled tunnel.
This piece ships as a fully bound score or as an instant PDF download for printing or tablet viewing. Individual parts come exclusively in PDF format.
