Description

Robert Sanderl wrote Slow and Unsteady to fulfill a simple concept: "...a solo for snare drum that was slow in tempo but dense in content." Although packed with advanced rudimental figures, the slow tempo allows for expressive freedom and great dynamic contrast. Sanderl cites the tradition of Swiss Basel drumming as a major inspiration for the style of the work.

In the composer's words: "I would encourage the performer to explore many different ideas with both pacing and phrasing. No two players should sound the same in their interpretation of this work." Additionally, he notes that any type of snare drum - concert or rudimental - is fine to use, and that the performer's touch can be personalized to fit their style and the drum used. This work is a highly musical showcase for the advanced snare drummer, perfectly suitable for recitals, contests, or just for the love of drumming!

Slow and Unsteady ships as a printed, professionally-bound folio with a full-color cover.

Instrumentation

Snare drum (rudimental or concert)

Reviews

It is sometimes difficult to find a solo snare drum piece that is challenging to the performer, yet accessible to modern audiences. “Slow and Unsteady” solves this conundrum, both beautifully and confidently. It is a handsome representation of the snare drum’s voice, with an homage to rudimental style that is blended with the freedom of artistic expression and individual interpretation.

The preciseness of the notation, upon first glance, might seem intimidating; however, after reading the program notes to understand the composer’s intent, the piece becomes more inviting. The main concept of this piece is to be slow in tempo, but dense in content. Additionally, the tempo is listed as “Legato (not strictly in time).” The resulting marriage of rudimental, precise content (plus stickings), and fluid time creates a unique voice that can change with each performance. Indeed, “Slow and Unsteady” is a celebration of the many inflections available only to the snare drum, whether it be a rope, concert, marching, or any other snare drum. The snare drum and its performers have unique voices; both are jubilantly recognized in this work.

“Slow and Unsteady” is a perfect selection for a recital, audition piece, or just as a showpiece to “pull out,” when needed. I will definitely be taking a closer look at this work in my own personal practice time, and am excited to develop a deeper understanding of my own artistic opinions, as well as a deeper understanding of the graceful precision available to us on our beloved snare drum.
