Dance of the Day
Dance of the Day by Nathan Dufresne is a fast-moving and spirited four-mallet vibraphone solo meant to reflect the intense yet graceful movement of choreographed dancers. Like dance, there is a wide range of motions – or, in musical terms, articulations – explored throughout the piece. Dance of the Day encourages performers to explore the full range of articulation possibilities on the vibraphone, from staccato to legato.

Vibraphone
Nathan Dufresne has composed a lively 82-measure, unaccompanied vibraphone solo that will provide the younger four-mallet performer with an energetic solo experience. Composed in a single-movement ternary form, “Dance of the Day” is in 4/4 with just enough accentuation to maintain the performer’s and listener’s interest throughout its two-minute presentation. In his prefatory remarks, Dufresne says that “Dance of the Day” is a “fast-moving, spirited solo meant to reflect the intense yet graceful movements of choreographed dancers.”
The opening section is marked at a brisk 165 bpm, with the right hand articulating eighth- note accompaniment and the left hand shaping a syncopated melody. This opening lasts about 40 measures before transitioning to the second section. The second section is slightly slower and is marked mysterious, as it contrasts the opening C major section with a modulation to F minor before returning to a final section in the original key.
This work might be a good contest or festival selection for the ambitious, young performer. Congratulations to Dufresne for his fresh, contemporary vibraphone solo. The publisher provides superb audio and video recordings on its website for easy reference.
