David K. Bakken
Dr. David K. Bakken has been teaching music education for over thirty years. He is experienced in elementary, middle school, high school, and college classrooms. His experience in percussion goes back to the Piedmont Middle School Lancer Marching Unit from San Jose, CA, where he marched xylophone in the late 1970s. While in high school, Dr. Bakken honed his skill at Nationally recognized Independence High School in San Jose.
While a sophomore, he auditioned for the Santa Clara Vanguard, made the Corps, and served four years – 1983, 1984, 1985, and 1986. During his DCI days, he earned Rookie of the Year honors in 1983 and two World Championships in Percussion Ensemble (1983 and 1986).
He owes his career in education to the succession of fantastic educators, including, but not limited to, LaVerne Beacock, Dan Smith, Ralph Hardimon, Anthony J. Cirone, and Scott Pierson.
Dr. Bakken earned his Bachelor’s degree from San Jose State University in 1991 in the field of Music Performance. He earned his Master’s in Education (Curriculum/Instruction) from Concordia University (Portland) in 2016. Most recently, he completed his Doctorate of Education in the field of Teacher Leadership from Concordia University (Chicago).
He has written Percussion and Front Ensembles from many middle schools, high schools, San Jose State Spartan Marching Band, and the Santa Clara Vanguard. His vision in predicated on three factors – Precision, Sensitivity, and Musicality. He wishes you much success.
